The municipality Avia (in 1835 – province of Kalamata and in 1837 – province of Itilos) with its centre in the village Avia (Almiros) was founded in 1835 and in 1840 joined the municipalities Gerinia (Kampos) and Kitries. Its round seal had an emblem representing the «Hercules’s head covered with lion’s skin». Around it was the words: «Municipality of Avia». In 1848 its population was 5190, in 1879- 5210 and in 1907 – 4693. A resident of the municipality was called «Avieos». The municipality Gerinias (Kambos) was formed in 1835 and had its centre in Kambos. Its population was 2364 and its resident was called «Gerinios». According to the «Ioannis Kapodistrias» project there was founded Municipality Avias with the centre in Kambos. Its area is 179.828 hectars, the population numbers 2908 people who live in 8 regions (former communities) and 29 villages.
